OSU participates in the JFDP program

STILLWATER, Okla. – Olesya Smagina, part of the Junior Faculty Development Program, recently arrived to Oklahoma State University from Uzbekistan.

Smagina’s educational background is in business administration and education. Upon returning to the Westminster International University in Tashkent she hopes to explore how these disciplines are taught at OSU, what methods are used and what assessment is applied to evaluate students’ achievement of learning outcomes.

“While at OSU I want to explore the classes offered to the students in the business program and attend the classes in the schools of business and education,” Smagina said. “Moreover, I seek an opportunity to integrate new modules that can be identified during my participation in the program. For example, now our department is considering opening new human resource courses. I want to contribute more to the curriculum redesign in the upcoming revalidation for business administration courses.”

The JFDP Fellows completed a highly competitive, multi-stage selection process to be awarded the fellowships. More than four hundred applications were submitted to this merit-based competition.

Joel Jenswold, OSU School of International Studies director of graduate programs, said the Junior Faculty Development Program is a U.S. State Department program that supports junior faculty from Southeast Eurasia and the Caucuses who wish to spend a semester here in the U.S. They work with their counterparts in our academic departments and learn how we do things here.

“It has always been a mark of distinction to receive JFDP fellows. Our success with this program is all the more remarkable considering recent budget cuts: last year we received two out of 40 total placements nationwide, and this year one out of only 20,” Jenswold said. “This is quite a testament to the reputation of our faculty both within the program and in that region of the world. It is also a great opportunity for our faculty and students to develop professional ties and experience perspectives that might not be otherwise available.”

Through their many activities on U.S. campuses and the surrounding communities, JFDP Fellows will also serve as cultural ambassadors, immersing themselves in American society in ways that bring the world to the United States and allow them to share their diverse cultures and educational traditions.

The Honorable Ponnala visits OSU

STILLWATER, Okla. – The Honorable Lakshmaiah Ponnala, Minister of Information Technology and Communications, Government of Andhra Pradesh, India, visited with Oklahoma State University President Burns Hargis and faculty from across campus on a recent visit to Oklahoma.

Ponnala, received his master’s degree in mechanical engineering from OSU in 1969. He worked in the United States before returning to India.

Ponnala has traveled the world dedicating his time to observe new technology methods and implement them to improve the life of the common man in his home state. During this process he has developed agro-based industries which include dairy and poultry. He is also credited to the success of many rural employment methods with World Bank loans thus providing employment opportunities to thousands of uneducated and unemployed people of the Andhra Pradesh.

Andhra Pradesh leads the nation as one of the prime centers of Information Technology whose IT exports crossed $1 billion in 2004. The government of Andhra Pradesh aspires to transform the state into a knowledgeable society and make available the benefits of IT to all citizens.

Wes Watkins Trade and Development to host Export Basics

STILLWATER, Okla. – The Wes Watkins Center for International Trade and Development/International Trade Center – SBDC at Oklahoma State University will host Export Basics training on February 14, 2013 from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Export Basics will help businesses and individuals who are interested in making international sales to understand what they need to know and to consider before pursuing an export strategy. This event will also show individuals how to locate potential customers in other countries.

“Although 96 percent of the world’s consumers are outside the United States and many U.S. companies of all sizes have been successful at exporting, too many small and medium sized enterprises have not yet done so primarily due to fear or a lack of understanding of how to do so,” said Anthony Cambas, Director of the Wes Watkins Center for International Trade and Development. “This workshop will be helpful to both businesses and individuals wanting to learn more about the benefits of exporting and where to begin.”

During the event, participants will learn about the benefits of exporting; the export of goods and services; basic steps of exporting and will additional key resources to help with international sales.

Oklahoma State University continues historical ties to Ethiopia

STILLWATER, Okla. – The Presidents of two Ethiopian Universities invited a group of Oklahoma State University college representatives to visit their campuses to discuss ways in which OSU can assist them in strengthening their institutions.

President Admasu Tsegaye of Addis Ababa University and President Yosef Mamo of Hawassa University extended the joint invitation to the group.

The OSU delegation is composed of Stephan Wilson, dean, college of human sciences; Ed Miller, professor and director of the agricultural international programs, college of agriculture; Dr. Stan Grogg associate dean, OSU Health Sciences Center; Mark Weiser, associate dean, OSU Spears School of Business; Tom Wikle, associate dean, college of arts and sciences and Khaled Gasem, professor, college of engineering.

The OSU group is visiting Ethiopia January 3-11, 2013.

While in Ethiopia, the group will discuss ways that each of their respective colleges can contribute toward the continued development of Ethiopian educational institutions. A proposal, jointly prepared by the respective colleges at OSU and the Ethiopian Universities, will be developed and submitted for approval at the conclusion of the travel. The college representatives provide the knowledge base of OSU’s programmatic capacity which will serve as the foundation of the proposal for OSU’s involvement.

Oklahoma State University has a long history of involvement in Ethiopia, which started with the development of Alemaya University. Alemaya University accepted its first students in 1954 and was dedicated by Emperor Haile Selassie in 1958. Until 1996, Alemaya (now Haramaya) was limited to an agricultural curriculum, but since then has opened its doors to many academic fields.

Ethiopia has recently gone through a stage of rapid growth in higher education, with more than 33 institutions of higher education now operating in the country. While the institutional growth has been rapid and impressive, much work remains to be done in the establishment of curriculum and faculty development. This is the area where the colleges at Oklahoma State University hope to make a contribution in the coming years.

The friendship between Oklahoma and Ethiopia has grown steadily over recent years, with President Admasu Tsegaye of Addis Ababa University spending a sabbatical program at Oklahoma State University in 2012 and 2013. Independent entrepreneur and film maker Mel Tewahade has recently released two documentaries covering the role of Oklahoma State University as a land grant institution providing assistance in Ethiopia. Tewahade’s hope is that the past will be a guide to the future, and that valuable efforts at development, growth and internationalization will be continued rather than forgotten.

Thirteen Oklahoma State University students receive Humphreys scholarships

STILLWATER, Okla. – Thirteen Oklahoma State University students will be studying abroad during the Spring semester 2013 thanks to the Don and Cathey Humphreys Scholarship for long-term study abroad.

Recognizing the life changing impact study abroad had on their own daughters, the Humphreys wanted to extend the opportunity to OSU students by opening additional avenues for financial support.

The thirteen scholarship winners are the fifth set of recipients of the Humphreys scholarship. They will study around the world including Spain, Iceland, Canada, Scotland, Saudi Arabia, Australia, Mexico, Japan, England and a Semester at Sea.

Scholarship recipients include: Devan Zorn, Nadir Nibras, Kelsey Shelton, Caroline Mason, Jessica White, Elizabeth Drain, Desirae Abernathy, Cortez Downey, Erica McCarthy, Anthony Gonzalez, John Luckett, Rebecca Williams and Rachael Halligan.

David Henneberry, Associate Vice President for International Studies and Outreach, said not only is long-term study abroad an excellent way for students to expand their horizons and get an opportunity to learn about different cultures, they serve as ambassadors for international education at OSU.

The Humphreys’ interest in creating global citizens has provided OSU students with access to new international experiences,” Henneberry said. “These scholarships provide students the opportunity to study long-term abroad. This eases the financial burden for the students and they come back with educational experiences that will inspire intellectual growth and give students a global perspective.

The Humphreys have shown their support for the internationalization of OSU by donating $6 million to support the University’s study abroad program under the School of International Studies in the Division of International Studies and Outreach. The gift funds several endowed faculty chairs as well as the student study abroad scholarships.
