A&S 2000- Introduction to Study Abroad

This course is designed to help you to get the most from your international experience. The class will provide you with the resources necessary to maximize your learning experience both when you arrive in your host country and upon your return. You will be asked to do individual research to tailor this class to fit your needs in your own host culture. General intercultural communication techniques, vital in preparing you for the different views and ideas you will encounter during your time abroad, will also be presented and integrated into class discussion.

This is a one-credit, eight week course, offered each semester.

Quotes from students who have taken the class:

  • “It helped me to look past the glamour of the trip and open my eyes to other things I needed to think about.”
  • “I have gained an appreciation for other cultures, discovered what is ‘Study Abroad’ and learned things I probably never would have known.”
  • “I learned about doing research and learning as much about your country as you possibly can, because if you don’t, when you get there it might not be all you fantasized your country to be.”
  • “I am extremely glad that I have taken this class for many reasons. I learned things that I did not know about my host country.”
  • “I was a bit skeptical at first but only because I hadn’t thought that hard about study abroad as a whole. I had only thought of it as a big vacation.”
  • “Another trait I have changed is not to say, ‘That’s weird.’ I went to Canada over fall break, and it came out of my mouth once. I caught myself saying it, and the rest of this semester, I have said, ‘Cool, let me know more.”
